The Legal Interpreter Pathway is the Academy’s readiness path for interpreters working in legal proceedings — courts, hearings, depositions, and immigration and asylum proceedings — built to the discipline that legal interpreting requires. It develops command of legal language, the modes of proceedings interpreting, and the procedure and ethics a proceeding demands. For most Afghan languages, the recognized standing is that of a qualified or registered interpreter rather than a certified one, because certification exams exist only for a few languages; the pathway prepares interpreters toward that standing, and to the standard the courts hold. In a proceeding, accuracy is not a nicety. The proceeding’s fairness depends on it.

A person who cannot understand the proceeding against them, or make themselves understood within it, cannot fully participate in one. In a courtroom or a hearing, the interpreter is not a service the court arranges; the interpreter is part of how due process is delivered — and an error there is not a flaw in a translation; it is a flaw in the due process the proceeding owes the person.
