Lapis lazuli has been mined at Sar-i-Sang, in Afghanistan's Badakhshan province, for more than six millennia — among the oldest continuously worked mines on Earth. The stone traveled further than almost any material of the ancient world: buried in the Royal Cemetery of Ur, set into the funerary mask of Tutankhamun, and ground, grain by grain, into ultramarine — “beyond the sea,” named for its Afghan origin — the costliest pigment of the Renaissance, dearer than gold and reserved for the most sacred figures on the canvas. And the stone itself is a composition: deep blue lazurite shot through with flecks of gold — the two colors this firm carries, held together in the rock for sixty centuries.
